A finely crafted silver box of octagonal form, richly decorated with traditional chased and engraved motifs. The body features panels of intricate repetitive peacock-feather or floral fan motifs bordered by leafy scrolls. The slightly domed lid is similarly decorated with a central floral medallion surrounded by fan and floral patterns. Small side handles are attached to the short ends, and a delicate chain with a silver bead pom-pom detail is affixed, possibly as part of a clasp or handle ornament. The lid is hinged and opens to reveal a polished silver interior.
This type of box was traditionally used in South Asia for storing betel, spices, or personal jewelry. The highly detailed surface work reflects the expert silversmithing characteristic of late colonial-era India or Ceylon, combining utility with ornate craftsmanship.
Weight: 92 oz., (2610 g.)14 3/4 x 9 x 6 in., (37.5 x 22.9 x 15 cm.)
Condition
The exterior silver surfaces show light tarnish and mild oxidation, typical for age, but the overall shine is still good. The intricate chased and engraved decoration, with floral and geometric patterns, remains crisp and well-defined. There are minor surface scratches and small nicks, particularly around the edges and corners, expected from handling and age. No major dents, splits, or losses are visible.
