This is an exquisite Italian or Flemish table cabinet, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, in the Baroque style with strong influence from Renaissance Revival design. It is also referred to as a cabinet of curiosities or a collector’s cabinet, used to store valuable small items or documents. A rectangular form table cabinet with multiple drawers and a central door concealing interior shelving. The cabinet is made of ebonized wood (probably fruitwood veneered and stained black) with rich contrast inlays. It is decorated with a profuse marquetry/inlay in a floral and foliate motif, possibly done in boxwood or olivewood. The center door features elaborate classical motifs, including a medallion portrait and mythological figures (e.g., putti or allegorical women), typical of northern Italian or southern Netherlandish workshops.
