- Lot Description
A William McAlpine (fl. 1840-1880) attributed, oil on canvas painting depicting a tallship burning just offshore, the crew making a desperate escape in their rowboats. The painting appears to be unsigned, though it maintains all the characteristics of a McAlpine painting, and comes to us as a pair with a signed McAlpine which can also be found in this catalogue. The piece is nicely presented in an antique frame. Provenance: Trinity International Auctions, United States, May 31, 2009, lot 105. Britain, 19th century.14 1/8 x 24 1/4 in., (35.9 x 61.6 cm.)The painting shows age-appropriate surface wear and varnish discoloration, but no damage is visible.
