- Lot Description
A William McAlpine (fl. 1840-1880) oil on canvas painting depicting a pair of tall ships on a choppy sea, a small rowboat traverses the foreground, surrounded by pieces of debris. The painting is signed to the lower left with the artist's signature and comes to us as a pair with another piece attributed to McAlpine which can also be found in this catalogue. The painting is nicely presented in an antique frame. Provenance: Trinity International Auctions, United States, May 31, 2009, lot 105. Britain, 19th century.14 1/8 x 24 1/4 in., (35.9 x 61.6 cm.)The painting shows age-appropriate surface wear and varnish discoloration, but no damage is visible.
