Domed-top (half-round) letter/document box made of solid wood (probably oak or pine) veneered with burr walnut. The box is decorated with applied pierced brass mounts with foliate scroll motifs, escutcheon around the keyhole, corner ornaments, and top plaques. The brass mounts are decorative but also functional, protecting edges and adding status. The Interior is divided into compartments for letters or documents, suggesting it was used as a stationery or letter box. Iron hinges, working lock (key is missing).
Likely English, but could also be Austrian or German, given the style of burr walnut veneer and brass mounts.
Circa 1780–1830 (late Georgian to early Regency period if English; Empire period if Continental).9 3/8 x 5 1/4 x 6 in., (23.8 x 13.3 x 15.2 cm.)
Condition
Overall, in good antique condition. Visible age-related wear, including minor veneer cracks and lifting at joints, small chips, especially on corners. Tarnish and slight oxidation to brass mounts. The interior appears clean and retains original compartments.
