An Italian wooden lidded box (chest), 17th century (1600s). It is made of dark hardwood, likely walnut or chestnut, reinforced with iron strapping around the lid and corners, affixed with hand-forged nails with a central iron pull-ring on the lid. Raised base molding with chamfered feet. The lid appears to have a simple beveled edge and possibly a cross-braced internal structure. Overall, the hand-hewn and pegged construction, consistent with early carpentry techniques. Original patina and wear consistent with the 17th century.
This type of box, with its secure iron fittings and heavy construction, was likely used as a document box, valuables casket, or apothecary/coin chest. Boxes of this style and era often contained legal or ecclesiastical documents, coins or financial instruments, small religious relics or devotional items.
The internal compartment is a fixed tray to separate contents securely.
The rustic ironwork and heavy framing are typical of Northern Italian or Alpine craftsmanship in the 1600s.
The lack of ornate carving and the box’s utilitarian design suggest it was meant for practical use, possibly by a merchant or notary.
Condition: The condition of the box appears to be structurally solid but shows signs of age and wear, consistent with its 17th-century origin. The box remains intact with no major warping or collapse. The base and lid appear to align well. The surface finish is worn with visible scuffing, abrasions, and loss of original polish, typical for a utilitarian 17th-century piece.11 Ñ… 8 Ñ… 4 1/4 in., (28 Ñ… 20.3 Ñ… 10.8 cm.)
