WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA MERCHANT'S OVERSIZED STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, stenciled "12" gallon capacity, semi-ovoid form with arched handles, rounded flat-top rim, and Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "Wm HASLAGE / & CO. / GROCERS AND TEA / DEALERS. / No. 18 Diamon / PITTSBURGH, / PA." with turtle-like design flanking capacity mark, bold brushed cobalt undulating floral vine decoration on upper half, framed by stripes above and below, graduated dashes flanking stencil. Reverse stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES." arched above a double-rose ornament. Circa 1870-1880. 22 1/8" H, 11 1/4" D rim.

Section of lower body/base to left of stencil (broken out, UPDATED 6/16/15) glued, with a 9" crack from break to center of decoration, spider crack to base running partially up the reverse, other minor imperfections.
