WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA OVERSIZED STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, front and reverse with "12" gallon capacity mark, additional brushed "12" gallon capacity at base, semi-ovoid form with grooved arched handles, rounded flat-top rim, and Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "EXCELSIOR WORKS / Isaac Hewitt, Jr. / RICES LANDING, PA.", brushed cobalt horizontal tulip and vine decoration above stencil, additional brushed cobalt stripes at rim, center, and base, and surrounding handle terminals. Circa 1870-1880. 20 7/8" H, 12 1/4" D rim.
