A Rare George III Sterling Silver Hot Water Urn
Maker: Emick Romer, London, 1766Of vase form, embossed and chased with scrolling ornament between acorn sprays, raised on a square base with openwork apron. The reel-shaped cover is surmounted by a Chinaman finial, with twig-form hoop handles and a dolphin-form spout. The front is engraved with contemporary arms within a rococo cartouche. Fully marked on body and cover.
Dimensions: 21 x 11 in.
Weight: approx. 93.09 troy oz.
Condition: Overall good; surface wear consistent with age, arms well preserved.Provenance: Sotheby’s, New York, April 16, 2005, Sale N08080, Lot 260.
Context
Emick Romer (active mid-18th century) was a distinguished London silversmith of Norwegian origin, celebrated for his refined rococo ornament and imaginative design. This urn, with its richly chased ornament, dolphin spout, and rare Chinaman finial, exemplifies the exuberance of English rococo silver under George III. Such urns, combining sculptural presence with technical virtuosity, were the centerpiece of aristocratic dining and are now prized as outstanding examples of 18th-century English silver.Have a similar item to sell?
