Artist Bio
Robert Vickrey (1926–2011) was an American painter best known for his mastery of egg tempera, a medium he revived in the mid-20th century. A graduate of Yale University and the Yale School of Fine Arts, Vickrey became associated with Magic Realism, producing works that combined meticulous technique with enigmatic, often dreamlike subject matter. His paintings frequently depicted children, allegorical figures, and surreal settings imbued with symbolic resonance. Elected to the National Academy of Design and represented in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Vickrey is recognized as one of the foremost American realists of his generation.
