Abstract Composition
An oil painting on paper attributed to Rolph Scarlett. Measuring approximately 22 x 20 in., the composition exemplifies Scarlett’s commitment to abstraction, with geometric structuring, dynamic color contrasts, and rhythmic interplay of form. Though unsigned, the work bears stylistic hallmarks consistent with his practice. Condition is fair, with some visible smudging in the paint and light creasing at the paper corners.

Rolph Scarlett (1889–1984) was a Canadian-born American painter, designer, and jewelry maker, closely associated with the non-objective abstraction movement of the 20th century. After moving to New York, he became affiliated with the influential art collector and gallerist Hilla Rebay, exhibiting extensively at the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (later the Guggenheim Museum). Scarlett’s work is characterized by bold geometric abstraction, vibrant color harmonies, and spiritual underpinnings, situating him among the pioneers of modernist abstraction in North America.
