Gran Coclé Region, Panama, circa 800–1000 A.D.
Height: 5 ¾ in (14.6 cm); Diameter: 6 ¾ in (17.1 cm)
A superbly modeled Coclé vessel depicting a stylized animal, its head projecting from the rim with alert eyes, a raised snout, and painted details in red, black, and cream slip. The body is richly adorned with curvilinear and scroll motifs in bold polychrome, integrating the creature’s limbs into the vessel’s circular form. A rear handle completes the composition, suggesting use in ritual or ceremonial libations.
This example exemplifies the distinctive Coclé aesthetic—dynamic, animated, and masterfully painted—embodying both symbolic and functional artistry.
Restored from over a dozen pieces with restoration over the break lines, and painted touch-ups.
Ex. Private Austin, Texas collection, acquired through family descent; originally collected in the 1960s.
