- Lot Description
A finely executed engraving depicting a recumbent lion, rendered with expressive linework and rich tonal crosshatching, after a composition by Rembrandt. The lower margin bears the inscription “Rembrandt del.” and “B. Picart sculp.,” indicating it was engraved by Bernard Picart after Rembrandt’s original design, likely dating to the 18th century. The composition captures the animal at rest with remarkable anatomical sensitivity and texture, characteristic of works inspired by Rembrandt’s studies of animals. Presented on laid paper with visible age toning, creasing, and margins consistent with period prints, and housed in a later wooden frame. A classic Old Master-style print that would appeal to collectors of Rembrandt school works, animal studies, or early European engravings. Approx. frame size (in): 10 x 12.25 x 0.5, Approx. etching size (in): 4.75 x 6.75.
