The Herreshoff Family Classical Carved Mahogany Sofa
Attributed to Charles H. White (1796-1876), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1825.
Provenance: Sarah Brown Herreshoff (1773-1846);
To her son Charles Frederick Herreshoff (1809-1888);
Thus by descent in the Herreshoff Family line.
The White attribution is based off a related pair of Classical carved mahogany recamiers that are labeled, Charles H. White Cabinet/WAREROOMS No 109 Walnut St. which were sold at Sotheby’s, New York, Important Americana, January 16, 1998, sale 7087, lot 363 and Sotheby's, New York, Important Americana, January 19, 2001, sale 7590, lot 626. Lacking some portions of one front foot. Loss to one inside tow on opposite rear foot. Back lacking upholstery. Upholstery worn and would benefit from a refresh. Some repairs to laminated toes. Upholstery not removed for frame examination. Some crazing of varnish. Typical bruising, wear and abrasion consistent with age and use
