DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Case of Oscar Slater. London, New York, Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912].12mo. 6 plates (some spotting). Original printed grey wrappers (light soiling, some rubbing to joints and ends, spine gently sunned). RARE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. ?Conan Doyle was approached by the defence lawyers who had acted for Oscar Slater shortly after the trial. [Doyle] was at first reluctant to involve himself in the case, but once he realized how serious a miscarriage of justice had occurred he did everything in his power? (Green and Gibson). Slater was wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death in May 1909 for the death of Marion Gilchrist. After serving almost two-decades in prison, Slater was acquitted in November 1927 as a result of several influential people petitioning for his release including Conan Doyle which led to a revival of public interest. Green and Gibson B11a. -- [With:] another copy, first American edition.
