HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph Letter Signed to Arnold Gingrich. Key West, Florida, August 1, 1933. 3 1/4 pp. on 2 4to pp. on brown paper. Addressed: "Dear Mr. Gingritch [sic]:-" Signed "good luck Ernest Hemingway". In addition, Hemingway has signed his name in two additional places within the letter. Some toning, light edgewear with a few small marginal chips and tears, 2 vertical and 1 horizontal creases. Fine. With original mailing envelope in Hemingway's hand. This is the letter that accompanied the corrected typescript for Hemingway's article for issue #1 of Esquire Magazine, Marlin Off the Marlo (typescript not included). Hemingway had objected to the proposed heading for the article, and supplies new blurb.
"I do not want to trade on fact that wrote A Farewell to Arms Death in the Afternoon - for on the new book - if you want to say Mr. Hemingway's latest book is called Winner Take [sic] Nothing at the end of the letter or in notes on contributors - That is O. K. - But that is the place for it -..." "Also will you please never tell anyone what I will here [?] pieces for you for - writers get paid by a certain category - ie. what they can get - it is a racket controlled by law of supply and demand - I would rather write for nothing if had any way of living or they they [?] cash advance..." "Am probably touchy on various subjects - But the sum total of your small unreasonableness and touchiness and affectations adds up to your bloody character-..." A wonderful letter written by a somewhat irritated Hemingway.
