- Lot Description
HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Autograph Letter Signed to Arnold Gingrich. Key West, Nov. 21 1934. Addressed: "Dear Mr. g." Signed "yours always, Ernest Hemingway". 4 pp. on 2 4to pages on brown paper. Approximately 11 x 8 1/2". Toned, 2 vertical, 1 horizontal creases, some minor rubbing. With original typed mailing envelope with notations, presumablyt by Gingrich. Fine. Hemingway writes Gingrich to ask him to send 3 Christmas subscriptions to Esquire Magazine, including his close friend, Charles Thompson.

Also: "Just got your wire. Awfully pleased you like the piece. Wire made me feel very good. Right after getting the wire I hate to write about this - but you can be perfectly frank. I need $500.00 very badly. I really need $1250.00 but the $500.00 is the worst of it... You see I have bee working wonderfully well. Just finished 73,000 word thing, after 8 months... I promise you my stuff is worth whatever you can pay for it. You know about that, though. Also I'm a reliable son of a bitch and if I say I will do something will do it - and always write you as good a piece as I could write if I were getting a million for it... I still owe 750 dollars in Africa and I have never owed any money and I don't like it. It makes me feel shitty but I can't whore to get it or I won't either..." An excellent letter.
