HOUDINI, Harry (Erik Weisz, 1874 - 1926). Oversize Photograph of Houdini Chained to two Tires. 1908. Horizontal silver print sepia tone image of Houdini restrained by the tires, chains, and locks, and staring at the onlooker. Mounted to a stiff card. 6 x 13 1/4". Unusual in this large format.
This image was created in conjunction with Houdini's promotional challenge escape issued by the Weed Tire Chain company. Houdini was shackled and then chained to two steel-rimmed car tires, and further enmeshed in a web of tire chains and 24 padlocks. Houdini made his escape from the mess in New York City in just under half an hour, and later repeated the escape at a Philadelphia theater. This photograph was used by Houdini for promotional purposes for several years after the challenge escape was completed.
