19th Century Russian Brass Traveling Icon Triptych of St. Nicholas Wonder Worker. Russian Orthodox brass tiptych icon depicting St. Nicholas.
Size When Open: 6 1/2 x 5 in.
Russian icons of St. Nicholas are devotional images depicting one of the most venerated saints in Eastern Orthodoxy, known for his miracles, generosity, and protection of the faithful. Typically painted on wood panels with tempera and gold leaf, these icons present St. Nicholas in bishop’s vestments, often holding a Gospel book and making a blessing gesture, sometimes accompanied by scenes of his legendary deeds, such as saving sailors or aiding the poor. The iconography emphasizes his role as a spiritual intercessor, with stylized features, solemn expression, and symbolic colors designed to convey holiness and authority. Produced from the medieval period through the Russian Empire and beyond, these icons were central to both church worship and private devotion, reflecting the deep cultural and religious significance of St. Nicholas in Russian Orthodox life.
