Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) French, 19th Century Sepia Toned Rococo Prints in Original Gesso Frames. This pair of vintage sepia-toned prints depicts ornate, pastoral social scenes housed in gold-colored square frames featuring elaborate floral ribbon and tassel crests.
Overall Size: 16 1/4 x 14 in.
Sight Size: 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.Antoine Watteau (1684–1721), more fully known as Jean-Antoine Watteau, was a French painter whose poetic and innovative work helped define the transition from Baroque art to the lighter, more intimate Rococo style. Born in Valenciennes, he trained in Paris and developed a distinctive genre known as the fête galante, depicting elegant figures in pastoral or garden settings engaged in music, conversation, and subtle romantic exchange. Watteau’s paintings are noted for their delicate color harmonies, fluid brushwork, and a lingering sense of melancholy beneath their refined charm, as seen in works such as Pilgrimage to Cythera. Though his career was brief due to ill health, his influence on French and European art was profound, shaping the direction of 18th-century painting.
