Eugene Larkin was born in Wayzata, Minnesota on June 27th, 1921, and showed early talent in woodcut printing with a gallery exhibition in Minneapolis at the young age of 23. A versatile American artist who also achieved national recognition for his expertise in lithography and collage, he graduated from the University of Minnesota and dedicated much of his life to education, first teaching at Kansas State College before leading the printmaking department at the Minneapolis School of Art and later serving as a professor at his alma mater. His artistic philosophy was captured in his book, Design: The Search for Unity, and throughout his career he drew deep inspiration from music, literature, and the natural world, often incorporating plant textures and mythological themes into his intricate prints, and gained international fame for creating works based on live string quartets and Walt Whitman’s poetry. He passed away on November 13th, 2010 in South Bend, Indiana, and his works are held in many museums and galleries, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
