Thomas W. Knox (1835-1896) American, Life and Adventures in the Orient (1875).
Size: 9 X 6 1/4 X 2 in.
This is a first edition of Backsheesh! or, Life and Adventures in the Orient, written by Thomas W. Knox and published in Hartford, Connecticut by A.D. Worthington and in San Francisco by A. G. Nettleton in 1875. The book has been rebound in contemporary calf, with gilt rules and gilt lettering on the spine, blank endpapers, an engraving of the Story Teller of the Desert near the title page, the title page also says “With Descriptive And Humorous Sketches Of Sights And Scenes Over The Atlantic, Down The Danube, Through The Crimea; In Turkey, Greece, Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, And Egypt; Up The Nile, In Nubia, And Equatorial Africa, Etc. Etc.”, and the book is embellished with nearly 250 illustrations, including 48 full-page engravings. Thomas W. Knox (1835 - 1896) was an American journalist, author, and world traveler, known primarily for his work as a New York Herald correspondent during the American Civil War. As an author, Knox wrote over 45 books, including a popular series of travel adventure books for boys, and he was well known for his written attacks on William Tecumseh Sherman and his Union soldiers, which rekindled the public debate about Sherman's sanity. His work was controversial because he published important information about the Vicksburg Campaign. Knox was acquitted of spying, but found guilty of disobeying orders. A. D. Worthington was a book publisher in the 1800’s from Hartford, Connecticut. Their books tended to focus on biographies and histories, and this is a first edition because there is just a single date on the title and copyright pages and the dates are matching. (See Bill McBride’s A Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions.) The book has a one-page Preface, a five-page List of Illustrations (iv - viii), a long section of Contents (ix - xxxi), and 694 pages of text. In Arabic, baksheesh means a tip or a gift. The book measures 9 x 6 1/4 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. There is mild offset from some of the engravings and light wear on the engraving of the Story Teller, a few brown spots here and there, and that’s about it. There are only two first editions listed on the rare book website we use and they go for $195 and $220, all the rest are modern reprints that go for $35 to $130. Imagine that for a new reprint.
