- Lot Description
In 1971, Vida Blue electrified the baseball world, mowing down American League batters at a historic rate. His 24-8 record (24 CG and eight shutouts), 301 strikeouts and minuscule 1.82 ERA earned him AL Cy Young and MVP honors as he became just the fifth pitcher to win both in a single season. Two years after MLB had lowered the mound due to the dominance of Bob Gibson and Denny McClain in '69, it was the brash young Blue who turned everyone's heads. His standout '71 campaign paved the way for Oakland's three-year run as World Series champions from 1972 through '74. Later in his career, the southpaw had two separate stints with the crosstown San Francisco Giants (1978-81, 1985-86). In 2008, Vida was enshrined on the Giants’ Wall of Fame at AT&T Park (now Oracle Park).
Offered here is a 1980 Vida Blue S.F. Giants game worn jersey in the team's rare and popular all-black style. The Giants only sported these black alternate unis from 1978-82 and predominantly on the road. A classic "Giants" cursive logo adorns the front with Blue's No. "14" on the front and verso. His first name "VIDA" in block letters is sewn on a black nameplate on the upper back. All letters and numbers appear in orange-on-white tackle twill. A Wilson size 44 tag is sewn within the collar. A black strip tag is sewn on the left front tail indicating the year "80" and previous "15" uniform number. A number change on the front and back of this jersey is obvious with evidence of an old number "1" and "5" being replaced with a new number "1" and "4". The V-neck pullover shirt has orange and white trim around the collar and sleeve ends, the latter of which have been custom cut underneath the arms and are now sewn back together. The jersey displays a solid amount of wear throughout.
