AN UNUSUAL ORIENTALIST GILT BRONZE AND POLYCHROME CHAMPLEVÉ ENAMEL MOUNTED ONYX JARDINIERE, PROBABLY RUSSIAN OR CAUCASUS, TIFLIS (TBILISI), CIRCA 1865, circular with a champlevé enameled lambrequin form rounded rim enclosing a conforming gilt metal liner, above a waisted side and bombe base mounted with a band of continuous stylized fleur de lys, flanked by scrolling foliate bronze handles terminating in female masks, raised on a champlevé enameled stand cast as cuff with four beastly masks issuing four splayed legs ending in trefoil shaped pad feet, marked on the cuff with Imperial Russian hall marks (partially effaced). NOTE: The rediscovery of the ancient onyx mines in Algeria around 1850 led to the establishment of a highly profitable industry in Paris producing luxury goods out of the beautiful translucent material. By the mid 1860s other sources for onyx began to be exploited, including the mines located in and around the Russian Caucasian administrative capitol at Tiflis. At the 1867 International Exposition held in Paris a small selection of works in onyx from Tiflis were displayed, the coloration and quality of the onyx being equal to that originating from Algeria.
