- Lot Description
Alice Kagawa (Japanese/American, 1929-2009) Parrott, Santa Fe, New Mexico, mid-20th century, fiber, ht. 101, wd. 54 in.
Note: Parrott was a fiber artist and ceramicist. She was one of the country's most important weavers. in 1952 she began attending the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where she studied weaving with Marianne Strengell and minored in ceramics with Maija Grotell. At Cranbrook, she began a lifelong friendship with fellow Hawaiian artist Toshiko Takaezu. She worked, briefly, winding warps for Jack Lenor Larsen in New York City. In the late 50s, her work was included in Modern American Wall Hangings at the Victoria & Albert Museum and she held a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City. In 1964, she represented the American Craftsmen’s Council at the New York World’s Fair. There she met studio furniture maker Sam Maloof, who would later use her weavings in his designs.Condition
