Alex Cooper To Auction Four Notable Works In First Auction of 2021

TOWSON, MD — September 24, 2020 – Baltimore-based Auctioneer Alex Cooper will host a one day auction on Saturday, January 30th, featuring an expansive collection of art, fine rugs, period, mid-century modern, quality reproduction and period furniture, and decorative arts.

Lot 1009, Jimmy Ernst, Space Scape, oil on canvas, 1955. Estimate $15,000-$30,000

The auction is headlined by four exceptional paintings representing different genres and periods in history.  American artist, Jimmy Ernst, son of German Surrealist painter Max Ernst, is represented by a striking piece titled “Space Scape.” Appearing for the first time at auction, lot 1009 is a marvel of Mid Century Modern Art.

Lot 1010, Thomas Cole. "Italian Cottage," diminutive oil. Estimate $15,000-$25,000

The auction also features a lovely, diminiutive landscape “Italian Cottage” by Thomas Cole (lot 1010), founder of the mid-19th century American Art Movement, the Hudson River School.  The piece, from the Estate of acclaimed Baltimore antique dealer, Phillip S. Dubey, boast an impeccable provenance.

Two stunning pastel portraits by important Maryland artist, Frederick Kemmelmeyer, are also featured in the Janauary sale at lots 1067 and 1068.  From the collection of the Coale-Sappington Family of Libertytown, Maryland, these two works are at auction for the first time after being consigned by the family. Kemmelmeyer’s work has been catalogued by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
