Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Puruha and Canari, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A black-on-red negative resist painted human effigy pottery har, its ovoid body decorated with vertical registers of striations alternating with spiral motifs and horizontal striations around the shoulder. The vessel's wide neck expands outwards towards a thick rim and presents a head with a lengthy nose, pursed and pierced lips, coffee-bean-shaped eyes to one side, and interlaced-coil ear ornaments. Size: 9.25" W x 13.5" H (23.5 cm x 34.3 cm).
The complexion of the visage is further adorned with negative resist spirals as well as wavy and straight striations. A marvelous and very large example from the ancients of the Colombia/Ecuador border that was most likely used as a burial offering accompanied by other ornaments of semi-precious stone, shell, metal, and more perishable materials such as textiles and feather work.
