• Lot Description
  A substantial and richly worked gilt bronze rectangular casket by E.F. Caldwell, the hinged lid decorated with a grid of twelve recessed panels, each filled with dense foliate and scrolling acanthus relief ornament within beaded and banded borders. The deep sides continue the elaborate decoration with arched architectural niches, figural and floral motifs, and lush scrollwork, all executed in high relief with considerable surface detail. The warm gilt finish shows areas of natural patination and verdigris in the recesses, lending depth and age to the overall composition Signed on the interior of the lid.
