- Lot Description
Massachusetts, late 19th/early 20th century, ash swing handles, each with label for Davis Hall (1828-1906) to underside of base, largest 6-1/4 x 13-1/2 x 9-1/8 in.
Provenance: Wayne Pratt, Inc., Nantucket, Massachusetts, January 1994 (accompanied by copy of receipt for $15,000); Collection of Dr. George and Connie Manger
Literature: This group is pictured in The Magazine Antiques, May 1999, p.724.
Note: Davis Hall is credited with developing the oval lightship basket form. Born to a maritime family, Hall moved to Nantucket with his family around 1840. US Census records list his occupations throughout the years as mariner (1850), fisherman (1860), seaman (1870), working on a lightship (1880), and as a basket maker (1900). Closely related baskets can be found in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum (acc. 2014.8.2a-g) and the Nantucket Historical Association (acc. 1995.0020.001a-h).

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
