Massachusetts, 19th century, hickory ribs and handle, mahogany lids, partial label to underside of base reads "Ma--/Willia----dwin Hosier/Nantucket/Sold me by Mrs. Brown of/the Quaker Antique shop.", approx. 15-1/2 x 17-3/8 x 13-5/8 in.

Literature: This basket is pictured in Nantucket Lightship Baskets by Katherine and Edgar Seeler, 1972, fig. 30, p. 74. The accompanying text reads "There is a note on the bottom saying this was made by "William Hadwen Hosier." The basket in the preceding plate was also made by him." The text accompanying the preceding plate reads "On the outside of the bottom is a note that this was made by Mr. Hosier from Millbrook Farm." A HABS report on the Elihu Coleman house lists William Hosier as the owner of the property "known as the Hosier Farm in Mill Brook Country" in 1862. This basket is also pictured in The Magazine Antiques, May 1999, p.724.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
