A group of badges and souvenirs identified to William K. Griffin of Company C, 9th Georgia Infantry, including an engraved Southern Cross and ladder badge. Items listed below.
William Kougley Griffin (1845-1931) was only 15 years old when he enlisted as a private into Company C, the "Hillyer Rifles," of the 9th Georgia Infantry on 13 June 1861. He fought the entirety of the war in some of the fiercest and bloodiest battles. After fighting in the Seven Days Battles and the Second Battle of Manassas, they were brutalized on the Bloody Lane at Antietam. At Gettysburg, they were bloodied at the Wheatfield.
The rest of the year brought no respite, with the 9th fighting at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. In 1864, they moved to Virginia to fight in the devastating battles of Grant's Overland Campaign. It was here that Griffin was wounded during the Battle of Cold Harbor. He concluded the war, surrendering at Appomattox Court House with his regiment on April 9th.
After the war, he relocated to Lamar County, Texas, where he farmed and was an active member of the United Confederate Veterans.
