1913 UCV Reunion delegate badge. Printed paper pin. Original fastened pin attached to reverse. Newark, New Jersey: Whitehead & Hoag, [1913]. Approx 2 1/4 x 3 1/8 in. Pin approx 3 1/8 in.
A Confederate veteran's delegate pin, featuring the Confederate flag with the bust image of Confederate General George W. Gordon superimposed at center. The caption reads: “DELEGATE / U.C.V REUNION / CHATTANOOGA TENN. / MAY 27,28,29,1913.”
A rare souvenir from the 1913 reunion of the United Confederate Veterans (U.C.V) held at Chattanooga, Tennessee, bearing the likeness of George Washington Gordon (1907-1911), a well-regarded Confederate General during the Civil War. Infamously, one of the first members of the Ku Klux Klan, Gordon acted as the first Grand Dragon for the state of Tennessee. In addition to his status within the organization, Gordon served as a member of the United States House of Representatives in 1907 for the 10th congressional district of Tennessee.
While metal badges are common mementos from the veteran era, such ephemeral paper badges are much rarer.
