Jefferson Davis Will Not Visit Jacksonville... Letterpress broadside. Jacksonville: A.B. Campbell's Job Print, [ca. May 1886]. Visible 9 1/4 x 11 1/2 in., matted and framed to 16 3/4x 19 1/4 in.
A rare newspaper broadside from the 1886 speaking tour of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In the sprint of 1886, Davis embarked on a tour throughout Alabama and Georgia, laying the cornerstone for a Confederate memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and then speaking at a monument dedication in Atlanta to Georgia politician Benjamin Harvey Hill, infamous for his "flamboyant opposition" to Reconstruction.
He visited Savannah, Georgia in May, speaking at the dedication of plaques being added to a monument honoring Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, under whom Davis's father served. While ostensibly to honor Gen. Greene, Davis used the opportunity to defend the South's cause in the Civil War, stating: "In 1776 the colonies acquired State sovereignty. They revolted from the mother country in a desperate struggle. That was the cause for which they fought. Is it a lost cause now? Never. Has Georgia lost the State sovereignty which...she won in 1776? No, a thousand times no." (Bryan County Now. "Today in Georgia History - Jefferson Davis Spoke in Savannah". Savannah Morning News, 6 May 2016).
The tour was met with large and enthusiastic crowds and the enterprising Jacksonville newspaperman evidently attempted to tempt the former Confederate President to visit Florida. The broadside conveys the disappointment that he would not be making the trip.
The Morning News was established on 2 February 1886 by the News Printing and Publishing Company, formed by John P. Varnum and F. W. Hawthorne. The paper operated briefly from 1886 to 1887 before being absorbed and continuing as the News Herald.
A rare broadside reflecting the widespread enthusiasm in the South for Jefferson Davis and the "Lost Cause."
