Ca. 1880 - Large silver knob, intricately hand-chased and engraved with a continuous panel illustrating various scenes from the culture of that part of the world. The expansive panel elegantly covers the entire side of the knob, showcasing a magnificent dragon intricately woven against a rich backdrop of a sprawling tree and wispy clouds. On one side of the design stands a solemn priest clad in traditional robes, exuding an aura of reverence. Opposite him, a charming small temple is depicted, its delicate architecture hinting at ancient spirituality and serenity. Round and slightly raised, the top features a blank cartouche within a circular frame. However, the standout feature of this cane is its exceptional full-bark Malacca shaft, which is a tremendous rarity. It boasts a pronounced ridge and a uniquely patterned, richly colored, enamel-like marbled surface. The cane is heeled with a turned brass ferrule, complemented by a wider silver ring intricately hand-chased with a dragon design and the inscription “Blessing.” Malacca shafts are fabled for exceptional strength and resilience and were sourced at high costs from the Malacca Palm, a distinctive species native to Southeast Asia. The Malacca took its name from the Malacca Straits, which the Portuguese charted in the sixteenth century. It grows indigenously in Sumatra. According to the relatively small body of research on this rattan, intense tropical rainfall causes a young Malacca shoot to assume this specific configuration. Although this occurrence is not unusual, attaining that specific structure and vibrant coloration uniformly from every angle, extending from top to bottom, is an extraordinary feat. This cane ticks the right boxes of rarity, excellence, and condition. Ultimately, it is a captivating conversation starter mascot, always eager to spark interesting discussions about canes.
