Antique Stone Mortal and Pestle. A rugged, dark-grey stone kitchen tool set used for grinding spices or herbs, showing a naturally weathered and textured surface.
Size: 7 1/2 x 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 in.
A mortar and pestle is a simple yet ancient tool used for grinding, crushing, and mixing substances. The mortar is a sturdy bowl, while the pestle is a heavy club-shaped instrument used to press and grind materials against the mortar’s interior surface. This tool has been used for thousands of years in kitchens, pharmacies, and laboratories to prepare spices, herbs, medicines, and pigments. Mortars and pestles are made from materials such as stone, wood, ceramic, or metal, each offering different grinding properties. Despite modern appliances, the mortar and pestle remains valued for the control it gives the user and its ability to release flavors and aromas through manual grinding.
