- Lot Description
Antique Victorian Cobalt Glass Oxymel Scillae Apothecary Bottle. A striking, cobalt blue glass apothecary jar with a matching stopper and a white label framed in gold and red that reads "OXYMEL SCILLAE."
Size: 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 9 1/4 in.
Oxymel scillae is a historical medicinal preparation made from vinegar (oxy-) and honey (-mel) infused with squill (Drimia maritima), a Mediterranean plant traditionally used in classical and early modern pharmacology. Commonly employed from antiquity through the 19th century, it was prescribed as an expectorant and diuretic, particularly for respiratory complaints such as coughs, bronchitis, and congestion. Its sharply sweet-and-sour taste and potent effects made it a recognizable item in apothecaries, where it was stored in labeled bottles alongside other compound remedies of the pre-modern medical tradition.
