TOWSON, MD - September 6, 2019 - Baltimore-based Auctioneer Alex Cooper will host a two-day Gallery Auction on Thursday, September 12th and Saturday, September 14th, featuring an expansive collection of modern and contemporary art, fine jewelry, sterling silver, currency, fine rugs, period, mid-century modern, quality reproduction and period furniture, and decorative arts.

Lot 1003, Herman Maril, The Patriarch, Oil on canvas, c. 1950; Estimate $10,000-$12,000

The auction is headlined by a notable collection from the estate of Phyllis Zheutlin. Phyllis Adler Zheutlin was devoted to the arts, and with her husband Harold, began collecting modern and contemporary art early in their marriage. They adorned the walls of their mid-century house with both international and local artists. Each work of art was personal: Herman Maril’s three chicks were her own children, and Georg Baselitz’s “Eagle” represented her maiden name in German. Mrs. Zheutlin was an active participant in the Art Seminar Group in Baltimore and an avid sculptor. Her art-making and art-collecting reinforced each other. Highlights of the the collection in addition to the Maril and Baselitz are works by Georges Rouault, Otto Mueller, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, and Baltimore artist, Aaron Sopher.

Lot 1012, George Rouault, Automne, Aquatint, c. 1936; Estimate $6,000-$8,000

“We are very pleased to be presenting this collection representing a lifetime of art lovingly and thoughtful acquired.” said Paul Cooper, Vice President of Alex Cooper. “We look forward to helping these works find a new home.”
