Kick Off the New Year With Something Legendary! Fine Rugs NY to Auction Storied Rugs and Antiques Sunday After Christmas

Dec 17,2021 | 09:00 EST By Fine Rugs NY

Santa Claus may deliver his presents on December 25—but on December 26, it’s your turn to acquire something storied and truly unique to kick off the coming New Year 2022! Fine Rugs NY is placing on auction over 229 vintage and antique hand-woven rugs, as well as paintings and objets d’art, at an exclusive live online event on Sunday, December 26.

Every woven knot piece tells a story…that of an artisan from another time and place, be that 19th century Persia, Qing dynasty China, or a France ruled by Louis XV. Masters of the craft poured every ounce of their skill, talent and heart into creating a work that evokes beauty and warmth decades or even centuries later.

Lot 951, Antique Mohtasham Kashan Rug

The December auction marks an exclusive opportunity to bring those remarkable stories into your own home to be enjoyed by friends and family. That may come in the form of masterworks like a rare 19th century cotton and lamb’s wool rug by legendary ustadan (master weaver) Hadji Mohtashem of Kashan, or a luxuriant verdure tapestry originating from 18th century France. Or it may be more three-dimensional, say an exceptional 19th century Japanese bonsai, a pair of Piedmontese consoles belonging to the House of Savoy, or erotic tilework from Neapolitan bordellos. Even buyers on a budget will find exquisite works ranging from robust Hamadan rugs with their distinctive single-weft weave, to an over twelve-foot-long vintage Moroccan hallway rug.

These all come from the collection of Victor Mashihi, proprietor of Fine Rugs NY. Since Victor’s grandfather Moussa opened his first store in Cairo in 1916, the Mashihi family has collected the finest rugs and objets d’art from across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. With Sotheby’s and Christie’s having dropped out of the rug auction scene, the family business is now at the forefront of auctioning truly unique vintage and antique carpets and wall hangings.

Live bidding kicks off at 2pm EST the day after Christmas on Fine Rugs NY’s auction platform,  as well as on Bidsquare. Prospective buyers are also welcome to place advance bids up to a specified amount prior to the auction as well.
