Finely woven Apache coiled basket executed in natural willow with dark devil’s claw ornamentation. The design is centered by a radiating star motif surrounded by an unusually extensive procession of stylized anthropomorphic figures, repeated in multiple registers around both the interior and exterior. The abundance and careful repetition of these figures create a striking visual composition while demonstrating the precise symmetry and accomplished weaving characteristic of Apache basketry woven in present-day eastern Arizona and western New Mexico during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
