Artist Spotlight: Dieter Roth

Few postwar artists blurred the boundaries between media as radically, or as playfully, as Dieter Roth. Born in 1930 in Hanover, Germany, and later working between Iceland, Switzerland, and Germany, Roth built a practice that defied categorization. Associated with the Fluxus movement but never confined by it, he worked across printmaking, sculpture, artist’s books, drawing, collage, and even edible materials like chocolate and cheese.

Roth’s art is at once irreverent and deeply intellectual. He embraced process, decay, repetition, and chance, often allowing materials to deteriorate as part of the work itself. Yet alongside his more conceptual and sculptural experiments, works on paper remained central to his practice. These intimate compositions, layered, gestural, and richly textured, offer collectors a direct encounter with his restless, exploratory mind.

Below, we highlight four compelling works currently available at auction.

Featured Auction Listings:

Dieter Roth, 1930-1998, Abstract Collage, Mixed Media on Paper
Signed upper right “Die Roth 75,” this collage (sight: 19 1/2 x 15 in.) is the largest of the group and commands strong visual presence. Executed in 1975, it reflects a mature moment in Roth’s collage practice.
Here, layered paper elements and gestural marks create a surface that feels both constructed and improvisational. The composition breathes—there is room for the eye to move, pause, and reconsider. Roth’s touch is evident in the way materials overlap and interact, never quite settling into symmetry or predictable balance.
For collectors, this piece offers scale without overwhelming space, making it ideal as a focal point within a broader postwar or contemporary collection.

Lot 316
Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

Dieter Roth, 1930-1998, Abstract Collage, Mixed Media on Paper
Signed lower left “Die Roth 76,” this horizontally oriented collage (sight: 6 3/4 x 15 1/4 in.) stands out for its elongated format.
The proportions create a different viewing experience altogether. Rather than centering the eye, the composition encourages movement across the surface. The narrow, panoramic shape gives the work a rhythmic quality, almost cinematic in how it unfolds.
Despite its modest size, the piece carries strong visual character. It’s a reminder that Roth’s inventiveness was not dependent on scale; even within a compact field, he found ways to generate tension, depth, and visual surprise.

Lot 319
Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

Dieter Roth, 1930-1998, Abstract Collage, Mixed Media on Paper
Dated slightly later and signed lower right “Die Roth 79,” this 1979 collage (sight: 10 x 14 1/2 in.) presents a more concentrated format.
The tighter dimensions give the work a focused intensity. Roth compresses his layered vocabulary here, fragment, gesture, and surface interplay, into a compact field. The result feels distilled, almost graphic in its impact. Where Lot 316 unfolds gradually, Lot 317 draws you in quickly and holds your attention.
Collectors who appreciate works that balance intimacy with conceptual depth will find this example especially compelling.

Dieter Roth, 1930-1998, Abstract Drawing, Mixed Media on Paper
Signed lower left “Die Roth 72,” this drawing (sight: 11 1/2 x 16 3/4 in.) is the earliest of the four works.
Unlike the collages, this piece relies on line and spatial restraint rather than layered assembly. The marks feel deliberate yet exploratory, as if capturing a thought mid-formation. Mixed media elements add subtle dimensionality, but the emphasis remains on gesture and rhythm.
This drawing offers a direct encounter with Roth’s hand. For collectors drawn to works that feel immediate and unfiltered, it provides a quieter but deeply resonant counterpoint to the collages in the group.

The Gentleman Collector: The Art of the Grand Tour, Day 2
Nye & Co.
March 12, 2026
Lot 318
Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

Together, these four works span much of the 1970s, offering insight into Roth’s evolving works on paper practice. From gestural drawing to layered collage, they demonstrate the breadth of his experimentation within a single decade.
Roth’s work continues to resonate because it resists perfection. His art values process over polish and discovery over decoration. For collectors exploring postwar European art, these lots offer not only historical significance but also pieces that feel alive, restless, curious, and deeply human.
Whether drawn to the scale of Lot 316, the distilled energy of Lot 317, the immediacy of Lot 318, or the distinctive format of Lot 319, collectors will find in each work a compelling entry into the creative world of Dieter Roth.
