JP Auctions Mexico’s Acervo de Obras de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo sale offers a compelling look at the breadth and depth of modern and contemporary Latin American art. Featuring 125 lots, the auction brings together works by internationally recognized names alongside influential Mexican artists whose practices shaped the region’s artistic identity across the late 20th and early 21st centuries. From expressive figuration and lyrical abstraction to geometric experimentation and surrealist printmaking, the sale reflects the diversity that continues to draw collectors to the Latin American market.

What makes this auction especially exciting is the range of voices represented. Established collectors will recognize blue-chip names like Joan Miró, while newer buyers may discover the powerful visual language of artists such as Roberto Turnbull and Mario Palacios Kaim. Together, the sale creates a dialogue between generations, styles, and movements that feels both historically grounded and refreshingly current.

Featured Auction Highlights:

Roberto Turnbull, La aldea (1992) - Lot 45

One of the most commanding works in the auction is Roberto Turnbull’s La aldea, a monumental oil on canvas measuring 180 x 200 cm.

Turnbull is known for creating deeply atmospheric compositions that exist somewhere between landscape and memory. In La aldea, earthy reds and muted browns dominate the canvas, while fragmented structures and ghostly forms emerge through layered brushwork. The painting feels simultaneously grounded and dreamlike, drawing viewers into a world that appears both familiar and impossible to fully define.

The work carries additional significance through its inclusion in the artist’s retrospective Caza Furtiva at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City in 2008. This institutional connection reinforces Turnbull’s importance within contemporary Mexican art history and adds another layer of appeal for collectors.

Estimated at $30,000–$32,000, La aldea stands as one of the strongest museum-caliber offerings in the sale.

Miguel Castro Leñero, Montaña con sombra (1999) - Lot 44

Miguel Castro Leñero’s Montaña con sombra offers a quieter but equally compelling visual experience.

Castro Leñero has long explored themes of landscape, architecture, and symbolism through a highly personal visual language. In this mixed-media composition, a mountain-like form rises against a softly textured background, creating an image that feels both minimal and emotionally charged. The restrained palette allows the composition’s subtle textures and shadows to take center stage.

Rather than relying on dramatic color or detail, the work invites contemplation. There’s a meditative quality to the piece that reflects Castro Leñero’s ability to communicate atmosphere through simplicity.

At 150 x 182 cm, the painting has a strong physical presence while maintaining an understated elegance. With an estimate of $26,000–$28,000, it represents an important example of the artist’s mature practice.

Gilberto Aceves Navarro, Rostros (1988) - Lot 42

Expressive and energetic, Gilberto Aceves Navarro’s Rostros captures the emotional immediacy that made the artist one of Mexico’s most influential postwar painters.

The composition features loosely rendered faces emerging from a vivid field of greens, blues, and pinks. The brushwork feels spontaneous and alive, giving the painting an almost improvisational rhythm. Aceves Navarro’s ability to combine abstraction and figuration creates a work that feels psychologically layered while remaining visually approachable.

Throughout his career, Aceves Navarro became known for his dynamic line work and emotionally charged compositions, and Rostros is an excellent example of that signature style. Even decades after its creation, the painting maintains a contemporary energy that continues to resonate with collectors today.

Estimated at $9,500–$12,000, the work offers collectors an accessible entry point into one of Mexico’s most celebrated artistic legacies.

Joan Miró, Serie Mallorca 7 (1973) - Lot 13

Among the international highlights of the auction is Joan Miró’s Serie Mallorca 7, a striking aquatint from 1973.

Miró’s instantly recognizable visual language is fully present in this composition. Floating geometric forms, gestural black lines, and bold areas of yellow and blue create a sense of movement and playful spontaneity. At the same time, the composition remains carefully balanced, reflecting the artist’s masterful control of abstraction.

Printed on Guarro paper and produced in an edition of 50, the work demonstrates the refinement and experimentation that defined Miró’s printmaking practice during the later years of his career.

Works on paper by Miró continue to attract collectors worldwide because they offer access to one of the 20th century’s most influential artists at a more approachable scale and price point. Estimated at $9,000–$10,000, this piece represents a compelling opportunity within the sale.

Mario Palacios Kaim, CUADRATURA 81 (2018) - Lot

Mario Palacios Kaim’s CUADRATURA 81 brings a contemporary and meditative perspective to the auction lineup.

The composition layers muted greens, grays, and golds into an atmospheric surface that shifts subtly depending on light and viewing angle. The painting feels immersive rather than declarative, encouraging slow observation and reflection. Thin horizontal movements across the canvas create a sense of depth and rhythm without overwhelming the viewer.

Palacios Kaim’s work often explores ideas of space, perception, and materiality, and CUADRATURA 81 demonstrates the artist’s ability to create emotional resonance through abstraction alone.

Estimated at $7,000–$8,500, the work offers contemporary collectors an opportunity to acquire a sophisticated abstract painting with strong visual presence and subtle complexity.

JP Auctions Mexico’s Acervo de Obras de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo sale highlights the richness and diversity of modern and contemporary art across generations and geographies. Whether collectors are drawn to the expressive figuration of Gilberto Aceves Navarro, the atmospheric worlds of Roberto Turnbull, or the timeless abstraction of Joan Miró, the auction offers works that feel both historically important and deeply relevant today.
