Details: The Jewel in the Lotus, Sumi Ink on Watercolor Paper, 24" x 18", 2019
Description: This circular calligraphy depicts Amitāyus, the Buddha of Boundless Life, seated in meditation with his long-life vase filled with the nectar of immortality. The flowing Tibetan script forming the mandala is his mantra—oṃ amaraṇi jīvantiye svāhā—which invokes blessings for longevity, vitality, and spiritual merit. This original, hand-painted masterwork by Jamyang Dorjee Chakrishar is a stirring depiction of one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism. Buddhist practitioners seek Amitāyus's blessings through mantras, visualizations, and rituals to attain long life, spiritual well-being, and overcome obstacles.
About the Artist: Jamyang Dorjee Chakrishar is a master Tibetan calligrapher residing in Sikkim. Jamyang’s calligraphy is a harmonious dance of Buddhist images and Tibetan language. His work encompasses Buddha’s Body, Speech, and Mind, and inspired Lama Zopa Rinpoche to term his form of calligraphy “Dharma Art.” His work uses the Tibetan u-med script to exhibit the depth, flexibility and artistic flavor of the language. The beauty in Jamyang’s art comes from his deep devotion to the teachings of Buddha and his love for the Tibetan language. Chakrishar’s works are spread throughout the world in private collections and appreciated by many Buddhist masters, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself.
