Coiled Pit River basket of deep, rounded form, woven of willow, sedge root, and redbud bark, decorated with bold stepped geometric motifs and diamond devices in dark brown against a natural ground. The Pit River people traditionally occupied the upper Pit River drainage of northeastern California, extending from present-day Mount Shasta eastward toward the Nevada border. Coiled baskets of this type were woven for both household and ceremonial purposes.

Overall very good condition with expected age-related wear. The natural fibers and dyes have developed a mellow, muted patina consistent with age. Minor break to the rim as illustrated. No significant structural damage or restoration observed.
