April Auctions at Rago: Classic + Contemporary Design, Art and Silver. Asian Art from the Estate of Hellen and Joe Darion

Lambertville, NJ -  Rago’s Remix Auction returns on April 13-14 with three sessions hosted over the course of the weekend. On Saturday, April 13, Remix: Classic + Contemporary presents pieces of contemporary and mid-century design alongside period furnishings, urbane antiques, and compelling art. Highlights include a Warren Platner for Knoll dining table, a set of eight Louis XVI dining chairs, a Stilnovo pendant lamp, and two sonambient sculptures by Val Bertoia, son of Harry Bertoia. Saturday’s session will also feature a collection of furniture, lighting and decorative metalwork by Oscar Bach from the collection of Pamela K. and William A. Royall, Jr.

On Sunday, April 14, Rago Auctions is pleased to offer selections from the Estate of Hellen and Joe Darion, including a diverse group of South Asian works on paper, sculpture, decorative arts and a smattering of mid-century furniture. Joe Darion, best-known as the Tony Award-winning lyricist of “Man of La Mancha,” and his wife Hellen spent much of their lives collecting Chinese, Japanese, Korean and South Asian works, many from highly respected dealers from around the world. The provenance of several works on offer in this session include the collection of Dr. Fred Olsen (1891-1986), widely considered among the most prodigious collectors of art and antiquities of the early 20th century. Highlights include a sandstone Khmer head of Brahma, 17th-19th c. Indian illustrations, 15th-18th c. Persian manuscript pages, and other artifacts from India and Southeast Asia.

A special Sunday session on April 14 will see nearly 200 lots of silver including a large collection of Tiffany & Co. featuring outstanding mixed metal and Japanesque pieces as well as impressive flatware services. The sale will also feature fine and heirloom pieces from other makers such as Georg Jensen, Gorham, and Buccellati. Highlights include an important Tiffany & Co. sterling silver ceterpiece bowl, a Gorham parcel gilt silver punch ladle, a pair of Mappin & Webb sterling silver seven-light candelabras, a set of eight sterling silver goblets by Georg Jensen and a 252-piece "Renaissance" pattern sterling silver flatware set by Tiffany & Co.
