CLEBURNE, General Patrick (1828-1864). Autograph Promissory Note Signed. Helena, AR, May 7th, 1860. Promissory note for $100 to R. H. Hargreaves [?], Treasurer of the Episcopal Church, to be paid in two monthly payments. On stationery of Farmer, Brace & Co. with their engraved decorations in blue. Cleburne's manuscript and signature on recto and manuscript endorsement on verso by John D. Parrish, Administrator of the Estate of P. R. Cleburne, ?Helena April 27th, 1867, Examined. Not Allowed. Notice Wained." Approximately 3 ? x 8". Toned, soiled, light edgewear. Fine. Cleburne was a Confederate Major General in the Western Theater; he was nicknamed ?Stonewall of the West." He commanded troops in several battles, including Shiloh, Richmond, Chickamauga, and at the first battle of Franklin (where he was killed in action). Near the end of the war, Cleburne called for the emancipation of slaves and enlisting them as freemen into the Confederate Army. Autograph items by Cleburne are quite rare.
