GODFREY, Edward Settle (1843-1932). Autograph Letter Signed. Washington [D. C., n.d., ca. 1910s]. Addressed ?My dear Captain". Signed ?Cordially Yours Godfrey-?. 1 8vo and 1 4to page on one folding 4to leaf of ?The Army and Navy Club" stationery. Approximately 10 ? x 6 ?" unfolded. Some minor rubbing, toning, some bleed-through of ink on paper. Very good. A warm letter to an unnamed fellow officer. ?? My plans for the future take me to Ohio for some days ? first when I shall start I am undecided ? Am sorry that I disappointed you and my friends as to Commander of Legion [?], but I felt that they win around [?] to preserve the ?pension" scheme which to my mind means a money value on Courage and Duty of public servants. And to that doctrine I could not conscientiously subservian [?] ? Chamberlain I look upon as merely a Leech, getting paid for [?] ? one of his bills for an even $100.00 ? I don't think as an officer of the Legion he earned it-?" Godfrey was the Commander of the Army/Navy Legion of Valor, made up of Medal of Honor recipients (Godfrey won this prestigious honor in 1894). The ?Chamberlain" he discusses is most likely Orville Chamberlain (1841-1929), an officer who won the Medal of Honor for his gallantry during the Battle of Chickamauga.
