Shepherd MC of GA Liberty Hall Crawfordsville GA 18 Sept 1881". Some rubbing, two areas of glue and paper residue on verso. Near fine. Shepherd was the second Governor of the District of Columbia, a political boss and one of the most influential leaders in Washington, D. C. history. He supported emancipation and then suffrage for freed slaves, spearheaded many civic improvements and reforms, and reorganized local government. His reign was controversial, as he over-estimated the costs of civic improvements, and taxed the citizenry accordingly. He eventually moved his family to Mexico, where he made another fortune through silver mining. His autographs are rare. From the renowned personal collection of Dr. George D. Lacy. Measurements: 2 x 4".
