Thornton Willis is a renowned American abstract painter. Viewed as a founding member of the Third Generation of American Abstract Expressionists, his work is associated with Abstract Expressionism, Lyrical Abstraction, Process Art, Postminimalism, Bio-morphic Cubism (a term he coined), and Color Field painting. His work is represented in major museums and private collections, including MoMa, the Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Phillips Collection among many others. In addition to Elizabeth Harris Gallery, Mr. Willis is represented by David Richards Gallery, NYC, and Scott Miller Gallery, AL . Thornton Willis moved into SoHo in the late 1960s and was influenced by the rough edges and graffiti of the industrial cityscape at the time. Of these early experiences, Willis has said that “Wandering around this abandoned neighborhood at night was like going into a cave and reading its history on the walls.” During this time, he was also exposed to and interacted with the work of fellow artists, Richard Serra and Lynda Benglis, in the neighborhood and emerging fields of artistic inquiry such as Process art, which would have lasting consequences for his practice. In 1970, his work was included in the significant traveling exhibition Lyrical Abstraction at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, and was subsequently donated by Larry Aldrich to the Whitney Museum of American Art.
