Biography: Agnes Pelton was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to American parents. Her family returned to the states, and Pelton received her formal art instruction at the Pratt Institute. Pelton's early paintings were rather straight-forward and representational. By the 1920's Pelton was experimenting in abstraction, and regularly visiting New Mexico. She began painting with a group of Taos artists known as the Transendental Painting group. In 1931, Pelton moved to Cathedral City, near Palm Springs, and her works were divided between the surreal abstract and representational desert paintings.
