Biography: Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac started his studies at the cole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1900 before he became a pupil of Luc-Olivier Merson and later of Jean-Paul Laurens. He also attended the Academie la Palette in Montparnasse. In 1908 Segonzacs first drawings were already published in various magazines. In the same year he showed his first works at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Independants. During this time he spent the summer months painting on the French Riviera. In 1910 Segonzac made the acquaintance of the artists Max Jacob, Raoul Dufy and Maurice de Vlaminck. He undertook trips to Italy, Spain and North Africa. During the First World War he created numerous drawings documenting his experience of the war. As a major representative of traditional realism Segonzac participated in the exhibitions of the most important Parisian salons after the war and had a major solo exhibition in London. Even in America, his works were highly sought after. From the 1930s onwards he was represented in all major exhibitions in Europe and America, such as the Venice Biennale and the documenta 2 in Kassel. Today works by Segonzac can be found in the MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London as well as the Albertina in Vienna.
